music: freelance whales

Look, I don't even know what it means to be a freelance whale.

Do they not sign long-term contracts with Sea World or what? Is Free Willy involved? Does anyone play the harmonica to lure in local sea life? Also, I'm terrified of whales. But let's not talk about that today. (No seriously, I can't talk about whales anymore right now. Be gone from me.)

I first came across Freelance Whales a couple months ago. Their bio on spotify describes their music as handclapping indie pop, and I'm not sure three words have ever spoken more to my soul. Also, it says the whole band came to be after "amassing a collection of miscellaneous instruments." There is much to love about this scenario! What's more, the lead singer's voice reminds me of Nate Ruess from The Format (and Fun.), so that's a super bonus in my book.

Here's one of my favorite Freelance Whales ditties:

I'm also partial to Broken Horse, Hannah, and Location.

Have you found any good music lately? Sharing is caring?

  1. I love discovering new bands, and anything considered handclapping indie pop truly speaks to the soul!!! I am also obsessed with beach house, vampire weekend, and kimbra at this moment!!!
